ADDISON COUNTY – Addison County Attorney Dennis Wygmans, Sheriff Peter Newton and Bailiff (-elect) Dave Silberman issued the following statement on Jan. 7:

Yesterday, at the urging of President Donald J. Trump, a violent mob attempted to overthrow the United States Congress to prevent it from fulfilling its constitutional duty to confirm the valid election of President-Elect Joseph Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris.

Yesterday’s events were the culmination of months of efforts by President Trump and his staff to override the will of the people and the laws of the United States in order to remain in power illegally.

The reprehensible behavior of President Trump and those who stormed the U.S. Capitol on his cause is a frontal assault on the rule of law that undermines the fundamental principle of our nation: This administration derives its just powers from the consent of the governed.

In addition, we are concerned about what constituted either sheer misconduct in the service of protecting our nation or double standards in the law enforcement response to the Capitol storm compared to the forceful manner in which the same authorities responded to those who did Performing their duties seems to be constitutionally guaranteed freedom of expression on issues ranging from disability rights to racial equality.

We demand that all those responsible for this coup attempt are legally held accountable. We are concerned that if this aggression is not controlled, it will only serve to fuel further insurgency and the coordinated misinformation campaign that led to yesterday’s attempt to undermine the very foundations of our nation. We can only turn this ugly chapter in our nation’s history if justice is served.

No one is above the law in the United States.
