Greater than 12,000 Wisconsinites ready for standing of Social Safety Incapacity functions

MADISON, Wisconsin (WMTV) – NBC15 Investigates investigated the Wisconsin social security disability system.

According to the Chicago Regional Social Security Bureau, around 12,200 Wisconsinites are awaiting the status of their disability benefits claims.

Lawyer Dave Hudec from Social Security Advocates assists clients with the application process. He’s been around for about 15 years. He said it only takes a few hours to fill out the paperwork, but about four to six months to find out if you were approved. For some, it can take up to a year.

The pandemic just has complicated things.

“25 percent of these claims are mental disorders and mood disorders. This is really a devastating thing. If isolation continues, it is difficult to create a support system for yourself when you are so isolated, ”said Hudec.

NBC15 News also asked the regional social security office about waiting times. The full answer is given below:

Answer: A person applying for disability benefits can help with the application process by providing full information about their physical or mental condition, including treatment history, full contact information for their treatment sources (doctors, hospitals, clinics) and copies of their medical records in theirs Have possession.

The law (Act on Social Security) defines disability very strictly, i.e. the inability to carry out a substantial gainful activity (work) resulting in death due to a medically determinable physical or mental impairment which lasts or is likely to last for at least one year.

The time it takes to make a decision on a disability application can vary depending on:

• the nature of the applicant’s disability;

• How soon can we get the applicant’s medical evidence from their doctor or other medical source?

• whether it is necessary to send the applicant for a medical examination; and

• Whether we are reviewing an application for quality reasons.

People can apply for disability benefits on the SSA website at www.ssa.gov/benefits/disability/. You can also create a My Social Security account to check the status of your pending application.
