ILCSC Gives Important Companies to Individuals with Disabilities Throughout Covid-19 Pandemic Emergency

The Independent Living Center in Southern California, Inc. (ILCSC) is a vital lifeline for high-risk Los Angeles City and county residents with disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic and continues to provide vital services during this emergency. During the City of Los Angeles Safer At Home order, ILCSC staff will provide information about required services and resources that are available to people with disabilities both physically and programmatically over the phone and computer (email, zoom, and social media) are.

People with disabilities, including adolescents, older adults, and veterans, will benefit from the information ILCSC provides for emergency resources for:

  • Protection against evictions by tenants during this time
  • Groceries, shelter, COVID-19 test sites and more
  • Meal delivery by the Los Angeles City Department of Disability
  • Using CalFresh EBT, which is available to them for online shopping at Walmart and Amazon

Customers are connecting to employees remotely and are getting their first experience using Zoom to connect to ILCSC classes. This has led customers to use it to also get in touch with their families and each other while being forced to stay home to prevent isolation. Customer receipts are received by phone.

Social media is an important link with customers and the community, providing updated information to our followers on Facebook and Twitter (customers, individuals and organizations), as well as other social media participants around the world.

The ILCSC offers a wide range of services including legal, peer support for the disabled, assistance with finding accommodation, emergency services, information and referral, system advocacy, ADA training workshops, independent life skills training (ILS), vocational training, computer literacy, horticulture, Job placement / job coaching, community transitions, TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) services and more.

The ILCSC would like to take this opportunity to thank the seven Centers for Independent Living (CIL) in Los Angeles County and 380 CILs in the United States for their hard work and dedication in providing basic services to Americans with disabilities during this unprecedented emergency .

Since 1976, the Independent Living Center in Southern California, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit, has provided a wide range of services to a growing number of people with disabilities.
