Nagaland govt to give attention to equal alternatives for all

Kohima, August 28 (PTI) The Nagaland government will set up community daycare for the elderly and a District Disability Rehabilitation Center (DDRC) in all districts to provide equal opportunities for people in all walks of life by 2030, according to the SDG Vision document.

Reducing inequalities is one of the 17 goals of the SDG Vision 2030 document from Nagaland, recently published by Prime Minister Neiphiu Rio in the state capital.

In Nagaland, 1.5 percent of the total population (19.75 lakh – 2011 census) have at least some form of disability, while around 7 percent of the population is over 60, according to the Vision document.

The document says that while many programs are being implemented, ensuring an inclusive society at the national level is a difficult task.

Rough topography, poor connections in terms of communication, transport and IT as well as a lack of basic infrastructure in the remote areas make it difficult to provide services, it said.

Lack of care for the mentally retarded elderly, lack of access to bank accounts and Aadhaar cards are some other challenges that the Vision document says are creating great difficulties in reaching these vulnerable populations, especially those who live in remote locations and leave them behind. .

The document also showed that the lack of community involvement, collaboration and support, as well as ignorance of the various programs by deserving beneficiaries, are hampered in the effective delivery of services.

The state government wants to set up community-owned retirement homes and day-care centers in each district by 2030 through the social welfare office in order to meet the needs of the increasingly neglected older population.

The government would institute inpatient care for the mentally handicapped for their education, training, counseling, welfare and rehabilitation.

It would also include regulations to ensure the employment of people with disabilities (PWD) by government agencies, for the education and well-being of people with disabilities, to relax the upper age limit, to regulate employment and create a pleasant working environment, and to set up an authority who is responsible for the administration of these persons formulate schemes.

Disabled people are granted discounts for treatment and rehabilitation facilities.

The government will also set up DDRCs in all districts and also organize workshops and discussions on social issues for people with disabilities in order to make people aware of the offers for the benefit of people with disabilities, it said.

With the increase in educated and skilled people with disabilities, the state government would work on their economic rehabilitation by trying to open avenues by creating facilities for vocational training and providing employment opportunities in various professions and trades.

The government will conduct skills development, vocational training, seminars and awareness camps to empower women to increase household living standards, the vision document added. PTI NBS
