Families of children with a disability or long-term health residing in Dundee City, Perth and Kinross and the Western Isles will be able to apply for a child with disability payment starting summer 2021. This new service will be available across Scotland from autumn 2021.

Disability payment for children replaces the housing allowance for children with disabilities currently provided by the Ministry of Labor and Pensions.

This new support is intended for families who are applying for disability benefits for the first time.

Families currently receiving Housing Allowance for Children with Disabilities from the Department of Labor and Pensions will be migrated to the new Scottish system from 2021.

This is the second form of disability allowance to be made available under the new Scottish social security system following the introduction of children’s winter heating allowance in November 2020.

Disability payment for children is the first disability pension introduced that people must apply for. This payment can be requested by mail, phone, online and face to face. This is the first time in Scotland that people can claim a disability pension online.

At the same time as the introduction of payment for children with disabilities, we will also start our local delivery service. This means that by the fall of 2021, when child disability payment is available for new claims across the country, people will be able to seek personal advice and support in one place in their community.

Social Security Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville said yesterday:

“The next year will be an important year for Social Security in Scotland as we begin to deliver the more complex disability benefits and we see the introduction of personal services.”

“We have worked with people using this service to ensure it meets their needs. This has led to improvements such as the introduction of an online application option and the availability of advice and support in local communities. This impact is not showing only in these big decisions, we worked with people down to details like the formulation of questions on our application forms. “

“By building this system with the people who will use it, we hope to provide a service that is as simple as possible for families. Parents and caregivers of a child with a disability or long-term health already face a number of problems, challenges and problems the access to the support they are entitled to should not be anyone else. “

“This first pilot is another opportunity to get feedback from people, and we look forward to hearing what our first disability benefit applicants have to say. We will continually invite submissions and adapt accordingly – this is the one.” Keys to making sure we are providing the best possible service and that we have a system that treats everyone with dignity, fairness and respect. “
