To engage youth around the world during the COVID-19 pandemic, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and several other sports organizations have partnered with United Through Sports to launch the 2020 World Virtual Youth Festival.
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) is the global governing body of the Paralympic Movement. Her vision is to create an inclusive society through parasport. The IPC was founded on September 22, 1989 and is an international non-profit organization with more than 200 members, composed of national Paralympic committees, international associations, regional organizations and international organizations for disabled sports. The IPC headquarters and its management team are located in Bonn.
More than 60 organizations, including the IOC, IPC and Special Olympics, are supporting the event, which will invite young people under the age of 18 to participate in online qualification events in October. The winners of the qualifying events will advance to the online finals, which will be held from November 20-22 in Thailand on the occasion of the United Nations World Children’s Day.
The festival will include young people not only from participating international associations, but also from migrant and refugee backgrounds, from the indigenous community and from vulnerable backgrounds who are often marginalized by society.
The festival will include virtual medal ceremonies, inspirational opening and closing ceremonies, and include a key educational platform with an opening conference, panel discussions and workshops.

Over 100 youth ambassadors, together with the sports leaders and all participating organizations, will make a unified call to action for a more inclusive and better tomorrow.
IPC qualification event
The IPC ‘Inclusive Sports’ Challenge is open to everyone. Therefore, rather than setting a specific exercise routine for the teens, participants are encouraged to create their own.
The IPC will hold its qualification event between October 7 and 21, 2020.
In order to participate in the IPC qualification event, young people who are divided into two categories of under 12 and under 18 by November 20, 2020 must film themselves and carry out an exercise routine of their choice for a maximum of 60 seconds.
Once they finish the routine, they need to spend 45 seconds on camera explaining their motivations to take on this challenge and what world leaders need to do to create a more accessible and inclusive future for all people. This can be part of the same video or a second video.
Messages should be recorded in English. Otherwise, an English transcript must be provided with the video.
Finalized videos should be sent to [email protected] along with the signed UTS Parent Consent Form (available online).
The closing date for all entries is October 21, 2020, 11:59 p.m. CEST.
To encourage participation, training routines from several leading para-athletes will be shared on social media during the qualification period.
Ecuador’s 17-year-old athletics world and Parapan Am champion Kiara Rodriguez and Uganda’s 13-year-old swimmer Husnah Kukundakwe will serve as the IPC’s Young Para Athlete Ambassadors.

A jury of seven judges consisting of para-athletes, Paralympic executives and advocates of disabilities will review all entries.
- Andy Stevenson (GBR): Broadcast journalist with a disability who has covered three Paralympic Games and is the main host of the IPC podcast “A Winning Mindset”.
- Angélica Bernal (COL): Lima 2019 Parapan Am champion in wheelchair tennis who helped start “Semillas sin Barreras”, which teaches children to play the sport in their home country.
- Deepa Malik (IND): India’s first female athlete to win a Paralympic medal by taking home silver in the shot put is now the President of the Indian Paralympic Committee. Received IPC International Women’s Day recognition in 2019.
- Ezra Frech (USA): Won three medals at the 2019 Junior World Championships in Para Athletics, including one gold and two silver medals at the 2019 Parapan American Games. Disability rights attorney, motivational speaker and co-founder of the Angel City Games, an adaptive sports festival for youth and Adults in the United States.
- Fiona Allan (NZL): CEO of Paralympics New Zealand who led the organization to achieve excellence and equality through sport.
- George Wyndhman (SLE): table tennis player from Sierra Leone and Paralympic flag bearer of Rio 2016 as well as a lawyer for the disabled.
- Maha Bargouthi (JOR): Paralympic champion in table tennis and winner of the International Women’s Day Recognition Award for the Next Generation Leader category. She is currently Secretary General of NPC Jordan.
As the judges review the videos, they will look for creativity within the exercise routine, performance, motivation of the youth to participate, and the content of the message to world leaders.
The judges will then have time between October 22 and 28, 2020 to review the entries and select which five participants from each of the two age categories will reach the final. Participants will be informed soon afterwards.
The winners will be announced on November 20th during the UTS World Virtual Youth Festival.

Many international associations, global NGOs and sports federations come together to present, demonstrate and promote inclusion, equality, non-discrimination and peacebuilding. United Through Sports Virtual Youth Festival 2020 is a celebration of our youth who will carry the torch of life for the next generations and on this platform everyone is equal.
