More than 730 South Australians have applied for a traineeship to support people with disabilities since the state government’s most recent recruitment campaign began in March.
Human Services Minister Michelle Lensink said the enthusiastic response was good news for the disability sector as the trainee program aims to provide a pipeline of eager, skilled applicants to fill key frontline jobs across South Australia.
“It is fantastic to see such an overwhelming response from South Australians looking to work in our disability sector – one of the largest and fastest growing industries in the state,” said Minister Lensink.
“The frontline disability workers play a vital role in helping people with disabilities to live full and independent lives. It is for this reason that the Liberal government of Marshall has allocated $ 9.5 million for this trainee program to do just that and, most importantly, to promote and promote jobs.
“If you really want to improve the lives of others, an internship is a life-changing opportunity to start a rewarding career in a growing industry and get paid while you study.”
More than 58 top-class applicants have so far achieved one of the coveted positions, 41 have already completed a thorough introductory training in which they have acquired knowledge in the areas of infection protection, occupational safety and first aid.
The new recruits have now started practical work under the guidance of experienced mentors and support adults with various and complex disabilities in state accommodation.
After one year you will receive a Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability).
Among the youngest trainees are three domestic violence survivors who were supported by a parallel Skills SA program called Empowering Career Options to take advantage of this opportunity.
Marshall’s Liberal government launched a recruiting campaign in March 2021 to hire the first of 175 disability service trainees in Adelaide, Mount Gambier and Kadina.
Further training positions will be filled this year via the group training organization MEGT, and further recruitment rounds are to follow in 2022.
The Marshall Liberal government’s $ 9.5 million initiative is part of a commitment to drive a skills-based economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic through employment and training in high-skilled sectors. For more information or inquiries about internships, visit the MEGT website.
