On the street, out shopping, in store, even in sports, and everywhere you go, most disabilities go undetected.
We have been producing videos for the Alliance of People with Disabilities for three months. As a former board member and chairman of the board at TACID (Tacoma Area Coalition of Individuals with Disabilities), it felt like the old days.
On the street, out shopping, in store, even in sports, and everywhere you go, most disabilities go undetected. In fact, one in four adults has a disability. In America, 26% of our population have a disability. . . 61 million people. The videos we created provided information in a friendly and helpful way. They weren’t overly technical and were created so that a wide audience could easily understand them. They answer the questions about COVID, vaccinations, vaccines, and getting back to work that we see all the time on the internet.
The first two videos we made were: “Getting back to work after COVID-19” and “What does it mean to be fully vaccinated?”
Return to work after COVID-19 (length: 4:04)
Details – Returning to work, face-to-face meetings, and gatherings can be exciting. But for some in Seattle, King County, and Washington State, getting back to work can be difficult and frightening. It can be especially difficult for people with disabilities. Is your workplace accessible and welcome for employees with disabilities? This video explains the best ways to transition.
What does it mean to be fully vaccinated? (Length: 2:17)
Details – As we continue to vaccinate our communities, we often hear the question, “What does it mean to be fully vaccinated?” In general, apply 2 weeks after your second dose of Moderna or Pfizer vaccine, or 2 weeks after your single dose vaccine by Johnson & Johnson as fully vaccinated. Once you are fully vaccinated there are a multitude of things you can safely do now. This video will help explain how to be fully vaccinated.
The first two productions went so smoothly that the Alliance developed two more videos. The next two videos were “Disability Rights in the Workplace” and “Vaccines Made So Fast, How Do I Know They Are Safe?”
Disability rights in the workplace (Length: 5:17)
Details: As we are back to work in person, it is important that you understand and know your rights, especially if you have recently been diagnosed with a disability due to COVID-19 or other circumstances.
Vaccines were made so quickly, how do I know they’re safe? (Length: 4:08)
Details: As we continue to work to get people vaccinated against COVID-19, there remain a number of questions and concerns related to the development and safety of the vaccine and vaccine approval process. Let’s talk about what we know.
Each video contained not only images, graphics, and background music, but also had the script for ASL (American Sign Language). Subtitles have been added in eight languages: Amharic, Chinese, English, Punjabi, Russian, Somali, Spanish, and Vietnamese.
In addition to these four videos, we recorded three individually recorded personal stories about disabilities and put them together to mark the 31st anniversary of the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act). Peg and I did this for free. We loved being part of the success.
