Bonda tribe of Malkangiri sensitised about rights of individuals with disabilities- The New Indian Categorical
MALKANGIRI: A disability awareness program was held for the first time on Tuesday in the remote Bonda Hills in the tribal Malkangiri district.
The event took place in the Mudulipada Panchayat under the Khairput block and aimed to make the physically disabled of the indigenous tribe aware of their rights and claims. Over 7,500 bondas, a particularly vulnerable tribal group (PVTG), live on the hill.
On that occasion, State Commissioner for People with Disabilities (PwDs) Sulochana Das said that physically disabled people living inland and in remote areas are not aware of their rights. The Bonda tribe live in one of the most remote areas of the country, and parishioners need more attention from the administration, popular representatives and voluntary organizations.
“There are schools for disabled children and young people, there are qualified training centers and reservations for government agencies. The government is also encouraging PwDs to create self-help groups with credit facilities to help them become self-employed, “she said.
That appealed to district officials and elected officials to provide all assistance to PwDs on Bonda Hills to ensure they are taking advantage of the benefits provided by the government. She also urged parents to encourage their disabled children to grow up normally.
The process of identifying PwDs living in Mudulipada and Andrahal panchayats is ongoing. The Bhima Bhoi Samarthya Sibira will be held in the region within a month to distribute certificates and aids to disabled people, Das said.
Over 200 villagers participated in the program, including several people with disabilities.
