The US Social Security Agency announces a new service for those awaiting a hearing. In addition to telephone hearings, Social Security will offer an online video hearing via the Microsoft Teams platform starting this fall.
With this new free service, applicants and their representatives can attend the hearing from anywhere they have access to a camera-enabled smartphone, tablet or computer.
This stable and secure online platform allows the social security judge to see and interact with applicants and their representatives like a face-to-face hearing, while maintaining the privacy of the applicant’s information.
Other hearing experts, such as medical or professional experts, can also attend.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has shown the importance of finding new ways to serve the public,” said Andrew Saul, Social Security Commissioner.
“For over a decade, the agency has been using video hearings to help inform applicants more quickly about their hearing decisions. This advancement builds on these efforts and makes it easier and more convenient to attend a hearing remotely, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic Um To ensure the safety of all attendees, we expect online video and telephone hearings to be the only two hearing options for the foreseeable future. “
The U.S. Social Security has only been conducting telephone appeal hearings with Administrative Law Judges (ALJ) since March, while the Public Health and Safety Offices and Workers’ Offices remain closed to the public. The agency’s ALJs have held more than 180,000 phone calls since March, so the agency can continue to provide critical customer service.
With the new online video hearings, whether the device is a laptop, smartphone, or tablet on an iPhone or Android, clear picture and audio of the ALJ and his representative will be displayed during the hearing.
