Deputy Attorney General of the Civil Rights Department, Eric Dreiband, reiterated on June 30, 2020 that cards and other documents with the Department of Justice’s seal were fraudulent and that people would be exempt from face mask requirements.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, inaccurate flyers or other posts about the use of face masks and the Disabled Americans Act (ADA) have been circulated online and through social media channels.

Many of these communications included the use of the Justice Department seal and ADA telephone number.

As the department indicated in a previous warning, the department has not issued it or is in any way endorsing it. The public should not rely on the information contained in these posts.

The ADA does not provide a blanket exception for people with disabilities from complying with legitimate safety requirements that are necessary for safe operation.
