The city council is also seeking a more permanent initiative for ongoing recreational activities
CATHEDRAL CITY – While Cathedral City has long recognized the need for more recreational opportunities for its youth, seniors, and families, the recent pandemic and needs arising from the lockdown and time spent at home have the city council and prompting staff to “move faster and more courageously” to rehabilitate and improve the facilities used by residents, Mayor Raymond Gregory told Uken Report.
To this end, during its goal setting meeting in January, the city council developed the goal of supporting the priorities of the parks and community events commission for improvements to park facilities in the community.
The result is that the city council has allocated $ 2.1 million for park improvements.
The following items are just a snapshot of what’s included in the approved budget:
Panorama park
- Repair and replace safety coverings on playground equipment
- Repair sidewalks on the southeast corner of the park next to Avenida Maravilla and Tachevah.
- Repair and restoration of tennis court fences and repair and new tires for tennis court surfaces
- Install security gates on toilets and improve toilet facilities
- Improvements to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, including concrete and asphalt paving, bathroom facilities, benches and tables, and baseball seats
- Install a shading structure over the playground equipment
- Expand the basketball court to full size
Century Park
- Repair and replace safety coverings on playground equipment
- Repair and restoration of tennis court fences and repair and new tires for tennis court surfaces
- Install security gates on toilets and improve toilet facilities
- Improvements to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, including concrete and asphalt paving, bathroom facilities, benches, and tables
- Install a shading structure over the playground equipment
- Add additional light poles along with electrical signage
- Renew the parking lot
Dog parks
- Build a dog park in Panorama Park
- Build a dog park next to the new fire station on Buddy Rogers downtown

“And that’s just the beginning, with plans for new parks and other improvements at various stages of planning,” said Gregory. “Stay tuned!”
This theme also includes the advent of public art in local parks and additions around the library.
In addition, the city council has revived the planned use of Cathedral City High School’s swimming pool for swimming lessons, classes, and open swimming for the summer of 2022, Gregory said. This project is being carried out in partnership with the Palm Springs Unified School District and the Desert Recreation District, using city-funded contracts.
“The city council is also pushing a more permanent ongoing recreational activity initiative in Cathedral City by asking voters to consider and approve a package tax to permanently connect our urban area to the Desert Recreation District, which is a community center in Cathedral City would include ”, said Gregor. “Our hope is to present this to the voters in the cities in November 2022.”
The city of Cathedral City has been focused on building great public spaces and turning our downtown area into a world-class arts and entertainment district for many years, Gregory said.
“As the work continues there, the latest additions to this area; the Agua Caliente Casino Cathedral City and Cathedral City Community Amphitheater and the Gregory Pettis Fountain of Life renovation have helped downtown achieve a place where more attention can now be paid to public spaces in the neighborhoods, ”said Gregory. “The city council and staff, supported by the Parks & Community Events Commission and the Public Arts Commission, have focused on the needs of our residents to provide high quality recreational facilities especially for local residents.”
