Incapacity Community marks 31st anniversary of Individuals with Disabilities Act

Disability Network of Mid-Michigan (DNMM) and Personal Assistance Options (PAO) are jointly holding a community celebration in honor of the 31st Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This law has helped people with disabilities across the country gain access to independence and be accepted into our communities.

Activities include live music from the Stone Street Revival band, a food truck, kayaking and fishing, inflatables, games for the kids, and more. Vendors will be on hand to provide information on community resources that can support people with disabilities across the Great Lakes Bay Region. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn more about the history of the ADA and share how this legislation has affected their own lives.

The celebration will take place on Monday, July 26th, from 4pm to 8pm at Auburn City Park. Admission is free and the first 400 visitors receive meal vouchers.

“Disability Network is committed to creating accessible and inclusive communities where all people with disabilities can live, work and play,” said Kelly PeLong, Executive Director of DNMM. “We look forward to celebrating, learning and sharing with everyone how we can keep the needle moving so people can lead the life they choose.”

“At Personal Assistance Options, we respect choice and pursue opportunity, with the community at the heart of what we do,” said Kathy Allen, executive director, Personal Assistance Options. “Inclusion is not a strategy to help people fit into the systems and structures that currently exist in our communities, it is about transforming these systems and structures to make them better for everyone.”
