Mental health credentials and titles vary from state to state, including the type of therapy offered. The different types of therapy that are popular today can be found in New York State, and they are worth learning about to determine what type of therapy you (or someone you know) might be interested in.
Mental health advice is beneficial to those seeking advice, insight, and support from a licensed professional. The counseling provides advice and information about psychological symptoms, diagnoses and prognoses. Consultative counseling therapy can be viewed as exploring our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors through skillful discussions with the therapist. Most of the time there is a bit of both, which could explain why the words can be used interchangeably.
A handful of examples where therapy may be considered include: when experiencing mood swings; when they want to improve communication, make a change, the loss of an important job or relationship, or someone in their life; and dealing with challenging relationships with people in their life – family, friends and colleagues.
A licensed creative arts therapist is defined by the State Department of Professions website as one trained in therapy that includes “dance / movement therapy, theater therapy, music therapy, poetry therapy, and art therapy.” They are trained in areas that include clinical practice and human development, the use of the creative arts to provide appropriate service, and multicultural and artistic traditions. “
Creative art therapy focuses on the process of using an art form and the experiences it creates as a force for change. Since the focus is on the process, one does not need artistic skills to take part in the therapeutic journey.
Farm animal or pet therapy is a form of therapy with positive benefits. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a service animal as “any dog that has been individually trained to perform work or duties for the benefit of a person with a disability, including any physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual, or other mental disability. “
A marriage and family therapist is defined by the professional association as someone who “treats a wide range of clinical problems including: depression, marital problems, anxiety, nervous and mental disorders, and relationship, couple, family and child-parent problems” . . Marriage and family therapy is often short and solution-oriented and geared towards achieving specific therapeutic goals for individuals and families. “
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder. The American Psychological Association says that “Unlike other treatments that focus on directly altering emotions, thoughts, and reactions resulting from traumatic experiences, EMDR therapy focuses directly on memory and is intended to change the way and type Change the way memory is stored in the brain. This will reduce and eliminate the problematic symptoms. “
Counseling therapy is beneficial for everyone. If you notice a change in your mood, health, stressors, and new adjustments, counseling is an insightful and supportive approach to accompany these efforts. Contacting your health insurance company or doing research on the Internet can help establish a connection to the therapy options discussed above.
Until next time, treat yourself and others with care, patience, and understanding.
