The level of disability and emergency access at Guyra Community Hall will be increased this year with a state government grant of US $ 62,833 to install three new concrete ramps in the well-used exhibition building. Armidale Regional Council Mayor Ian Tiley said he was delighted that the council was able to secure the grant that would ensure Guyra Community Hall meets all entry requirements. “It’s great that our community has fewer barriers to less mobile devices to use and enjoy the facilities at Guyra Showground,” said Cr Tiley. “We know we have a lot more to do and the council works with the state government to continuously improve our facilities.” We focus on ensuring that disabled and less mobile people have the same access as every member of our community. “The Council would like to acknowledge MP Adam Marshall for his early support for the Council proposal and we look forward to his continued support with future grant applications.” Also read: M Marshall said the hall does not meet current accessibility standards and regulations. “While the Guyra Community Hall is a prominent place for public gatherings, the incline of the existing ramps can make it difficult for people with reduced mobility to get into this building,” said Marshall. “Armidale Regional Council will use local contractors to solve this problem by demolishing two non-compliant emergency exit ramps and building three new ramps out of brick and concrete.” Additional lighting will be installed at each ramp location along with associated landings, handrails and tactile markings. “The additional ramp is welcomed as it offers direct access to the main entrance of the hall.” In times of disaster, the building also functions as an evacuation center for emergency management. These improvements will make it more functional for evacuees and support staff. “As the hall is used for popular events such as the Guyra Show and Senior’s Festival, safe and appropriate access is vital to prevent injury and ensure the facility is at its full potential can unfold. “
