Panaji: To alert the government to the urgent need for welfare systems that have not been granted to them in over four months, the Disability Rights Association of Goa (Drag) held a one-day hunger strike in Panaji on Tuesday.
“The amount of the DSS system applies to the poorest of the poor – those who have no monthly income. Not getting the money put the handicapped under a heavy financial burden, ”said Drag President Avelino D’Sa.
He said a total of 12,000 people are still awaiting sanctioning of the amount.
“Members of the disabled community cannot make ends meet, which is why they called us for help. We hope the government will approve the amount for all upcoming months before December 31st, ”he said.
He went on to say that Drag’s attempts to make an appointment with the prime minister were in vain. “We want to tell him our complaints, but he doesn’t even have half an hour for Goa’s disabled people,” he said.
